Episode 2 Transcript
Good morning, and welcome to International Living’s Morning Recess, where the coffee’s hot, the internet is up, and the world is your oyster.
I’m Dan Prescher, shaved and showered just to stay in practice, and my wife, Suzan, and I have already been watching our new favorite TV and YouTube channel this morning, The Smithsonian Channel. So much cool history, travel, and science. A lot of us are spending more time in front of screens these days, and we should all keep in mind that we have complete control over what appears on those screens, it’s up to you, and the thought you put into it equals the thoughts you get out of it. Guard those sense portals, as the Buddha said, and you’ll be squared away.
Speaking of getting squared away, I’ve rearranged the basement three times so far this week, and I’m drawing up plans to do it again, so I can tell I really need to get out of the house for a bit, and I’m planning to do that. But first, I’m going to enroll in a course at Yale University…that’s right. Yale has been offering a course called The Science of Well Being…as soon as it was developed it became one of Yale’s most popular courses, and they’re letting you audit it, online, for FREE! I’m not kidding, you can go to Yale for free now. You can also get a certificate of completion for $49 bucks, which doesn’t sound like a bad deal to me, having proof of course credit from Yale you can flash around. I may do that, but I’m for sure going to at least audit this course…I actually read the book the course is at least partially derived from, and I can’t wait to audit this course online. The Science of Well Being…how can you not audit a course like that for free?
Right after I register for that, I’m going to watch Betty White on Youtube read Harry the Dirty Dog. I’d watch Betty White read the phone book, just like I’d watch Keith Richards play Mary Had a Little Lamb. I haven’t look for Keith Richards playing Mary Had a Little Lamb yet, but I’m putting that on my todo list right now. I love Betty White, and I’m anxious to hear her rendition of Harry the Dirty Dog. A classic.
I’ve also done my morning International Living Facebook surfing, checking up on today’s reports from the IL correspondents around the world. A dozen or so of the countries that expats and retirees are living and working in are covered on International Living Facebook pages, and they are all easy to find in one place…the IL main Facebook page, you can get anywhere in the world from there. You can get anywhere in the world from the main IL website as well, but visit the bathroom and get a fresh cup of coffee first, because it’s deep and broad and you may end up taking a dive into a country or topic you haven’t thought of yet. Incidentally, the book Suzan and I wrote is also available there but I’m not going to be so crass as to promote this extraordinary title at such a remarkable price on this blog. However, if you happen to stumble on to it for some reason, you might check it out.
The IL Facebook pages and the main IL website are great ways to stay up to date all these places and ideas and the whole International Living lifestyle thing, which will be important…because what the world is going through right now will not only change almost everything for almost everybody, but will bring new and potentially enormous opportunities and options in its wake. Things like this ALWAYS create new options and opportunities if you know where and how to look, and that’s what International Living is for.
Hey, here’s an opportunity already! Are you worried about your kids or grandkids watching too much TV and too many movies these days? Mute the sound and turn on the subtitles—BOOM—they’re reading! Now, change the subtitles to Spanish or Portuguese and—BOOM—you’re learning a new language! You’re welcome.
OK, it’s time for Dan’s Talent Corner, which I just made up. I’m going to sing a song, and start a challenge—to all the other International Living correspondents and editors out there…send me videos of you doing your thing…singing, reading poetry, doing interpretive dance, making baking soda volcanos, whatever…and I’ll post them here. I’ll start with a little tune by Gene Autry called South of the Border. Now would be the time to fast forward if you’re embarrassed by people embarrassing themselves on the internet.
There you have it. The challenge is out to International Living correspondents around the world, send in those videos and expose yourself, figuratively, like I just did. I dare you.
Alrighty. Breath deep, keep cool, be kind, and maintain situational awareness until we meet again. See you next time.
